There is a national push by the people of America to make the recreational use of marijuana legal across the country. We have had six states legalize the plant and they are Alaska, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. The rest of the 50 seems to be grudgingly following behind. Darrell Kelley in his new single “I’m So High” (Viral Records) is getting his inspiration from the great state of Nevada. Vegas must be a lot of fun when you are so high that you get the idea you need to write a song about being so high.

Darrell Kelley is a musician and entrepreneur that has been consistently putting out singles and albums for a while now. His full-length releases (“Unity” from 2018 and “Here Ends The Lesson” in 2019) seemed to have more of a gospel hip hop flava and now the artist is letting his hair down. It must be some pretty heavy boo if it makes your heart beat that fast. One of the great things the users know about the drug is that it makes you relaxed. The singer notes in the song “I won’t get locked up because in Vegas it’s really legit”. So the level of relaxation increases tenfold when you don’t have to hole up in some undisclosed location and peer out the blinds every time you hear a sound you don’t recognize. The cops can strike paranoia in the heart of a brother taking a toke, but not tonight in Vegas. The Las Vegas town Council is making people relaxed and creative at the same time. Go Vegas!

The funky beats and keyboards give the song a slight hazy effect. It is also punctuated with some sexy moaning from a backup singer weaving in and out of the production. It is a funny trait that all weed smokers like to do; give you updates on just how high they are. It makes me laugh when people do it at a party. It is very entertaining when someone does it on a laid back party record like this. At least this singer knows the difference between what he is smoking and what he is drinking. The feeling is the difference and after I was done listening I felt like getting on Darrell’s level — and that is a good thang. Just like this record is a good thang.

“I’m so high right now,” Darrell Kelley intones, over and over again, emphasizing a very specific mood, spacey and serene. Kelley’s latest release is as fantastical and hopeful as its opening implies, a fluid melodic build-up that spotlight his cosmic voice and soulful message. Showing how his art is a non-negotiable part of himself, Darrell Kelley shares his ability to create spaces to dream and stretch in “I’m So High”, and humbly but surely continues his winning streak in the Hip-Hop/R&B music scene. He created such a fully realized song with a dreamlike feel that no doubt about it, Kelley’s latest major piece will break through the noise.

Darrell Kelley Brings A Storm Of Positive Vibes
Check out the interview with Darrell Kelley exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

SKILLY: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
DK: My uncle and aunt used to perform and my uncle managed several groups. Uncle had me in a few groups, and then I eventually went on my own and started singing in night clubs and won trophies singing. I was performing Michael Jackson and Lenny Williams. Eventually I quit singing then I open the restaurant and hired a band. Every year we would do concerts, so every year I would have to write a song and so when I had a catalog of songs I thought it was time to go public.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
You have to be very confident in what you’re doing. You can’t believe everything you hear and you have to stay out of negativity and drama and surround yourself with positive people. Especially positive people in the music industry.

What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
It’s hard to give your undivided attention, because everyone is interested in talking to you, scheduling appointments and interviews. It’s hard trying to satisfy everyone while still remaining true to yourself and your craft.

We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Simply work with the pros, follow their advice, build a team and stay true to your dreams. Never let your ego grow too high. Stay calm and relaxed and listen to the people who have a lot of experience in the industry. It’s a plan that’s working for me.

Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
I was born and raised in Boston and I grew up in poverty. I practically raised my siblings, and it was a struggle on a daily basis. Family and music kept me going because there was a lot of love in our family and in music. I now live in Georgia and thankfully the music scene is great here with very loyal and supportive fans that always have your back.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Doing what I’m doing but doing it better every single day. I feel so blessed to be part of this crazy world they call the music business.

Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
God, family, and love are my inspirations and who I look up to in today’s world and the world of tomorrow. Amen.

How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
I believe that anyone can be successful in today’s world of music as long as they put out great music with a real message. I believe that a lot of the current music is overrated, and I believe that a lot of music has too much hatred in it with too much drama. I know that that is part of the music industry, but when our children listen to it they don’t understand that many people are just writing music for fame and fortune and that what they’re saying is not 100% true.
